Getting Started

Bixby Home Studio has been designed to help device developers like you add Bixby intelligence quickly and easily, while enabling voice control to your Internet of Things (IoT) devices. It is an easy to use Graphical User Interface which helps you customize the voice experience of user utterances just by using a Drag and Drop interface. With these guides, you'll learn how to use this tool.

Adding intelligence to voice control of your devices involves five steps:

  1. Connect the device to the SmartThings platform
  2. Prepare the device for testing
  3. Define and build intelligent voice metadata
  4. Test the intelligent voice control
  5. Publish the voice metadata

On-device testing and submissions of metadata for voice commands are only available to device manufacturer developers who have registered their device with SmartThings. For more information, see the Start Developing guide on the SmartThings Developers website.

Connect Device to SmartThings Platform

This is the first step towards building intelligence into voice control of your devices. Devices need to be onboarded into the SmartThings platform. The first thing you need to do is to connect your hardware devices to the SmartThings platform. To know how to connect your devices to SmartThings platform, read the SmartThings Start Developing guide.

You can enable and test intelligent voice controls for your devices even before they are WWST / CST certified.

This step can be skipped if your devices are already connected to the SmartThings platform.

Prepare Device for Testing

Follow the instructions in the Test Your Device guide on the SmartThings Developers website to prepare your device for testing. Confirm that you are able to control your device using the SmartThings App. Next, login to Bixby Home Studio and check if your device is visible in the Bixby Home Studio as shown below.

This step can be skipped if your devices are already connected to the SmartThings platform.

Define and Build

Follow the instructions in the Quick Start Guide to learn about creating an intelligent experience for the voice utterances based on standard Capabilities supported in the SmartThings platform. Bixby Home Studio has so many ready-to-use voice utterances that are already trained with the Bixby Voice Assistant to chose from.

Test the Intelligent Voice Control

Once the voice metadata is built, you can test out the experience using the Try it simulator as shown below and make modifications as required. For more information, see How to use Bixby Home Studio.

Publish Voice Metadata

This step will make the intelligent voice experience that you built available to all users interacting with the device instantly. Once the voice meta data is verified with the Simulator, you can export it and publish it by following the instructions in Publishing your Bixby Device Graph.
